Curtly and Steve later agreed to a memorabilia deal that included a set of wristbands and made them thousands. I always knew Waugh was smarter than me.

I don't remember the protagonists, but I remember an incident involving a bowler and a wristband.

2 other personal Deano memories was that he was one of the first [the first?] to wear sunnies while fielding. I thought he was a complete flogger for doing that but it turns out I was the xenophobic flogger for disapproving it

The other was him being the first [one of the first?] to wear black makeup under his eyes during night sessions of ODIs. To this day it remains being a flog move.

// was Mo Matthews the first to leave his hat on when he bowled?
// the under-eye black makeup idea was invented by a fella with the unfortunate surname of Farkas, IIRC.
His career span closely matched my naïve cricket-mad years [full of mostly disappointment and heartache]. Loved how he went about it, especially in ODIs. He was at the forefront of ushering in a new era of fielding excellence, especially realising its value as an attacking tool.

Same could be said for his ODI batting, ramping it up a notch back when 240 runs was thought to be a reasonably defendable team effort. He showed up the oldskool plodders for what they were. Mark Taylor. *coff* Mark Taylor. His career stats are right up there with the best of them for that era.

My 2 enduring memories of him were firstly, seeing grainy footage of him on the news, having a huge barf out in the middle during the tied Test vs. India in Madras, and in the gutsiest of performances in only his 3rd Test, somehow managing to hang in there and score a double century.

I think that's the first and only time I've seen projectile vomiting on the nightly news.

And the second one is being at this match http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65910.html watching him get his 2nd ODI century in consecutive days.... at an absolutely psychopathic run rate for those cricketing times.
They, along with a Sydney station (and maybe 6PR?), have been broadcasting the cricket. Jones is there as the popular Victorian cricket identity, so naturally he's the AW jock. His opinions in print have more holes than a colander with extra holes. He's a really dreadful ball-by-ball commentator, but has cultivated a role in India, hence all the sucking up and shilling the BCCI.
Big Ramifications commented on '"AWAY" WITH YOU!'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01bb08a0665a970d2015-12-17T22:12:47Z2015-12-17T22:12:47ZBig Ramificationshttp://www.bannedbooksweek.org/censorship/bannedbooksthatshapedamericaSomehow I've remained almost totally ignorant on the musings of Dean Jones, except for on this blog where Tony occasionally...
Somehow I've remained almost totally ignorant on the musings of Dean Jones, except for on this blog where Tony occasionally mocks his work.
The way you describe him, Tony, reminds me very much of Perth shock <s>jocks</s> sports journalists like Brad Hardie, Karl Landon, and George Gorilla-shits. Absolute fat heads, and they have me changing the station within 10 minutes of having the misfortune of accidentally tuning in.

I'm not sure how his omission would have made things worse for Sri Lanka whilst playing in Australia. The subcontinental conditions DO seem to have got worse - or perhaps "more extreme" is a better way to put it - in recent times, but I think the limited overs approach to scoring has really affected players' ability to score runs, and grind out an innings in less-than-familiar conditions.

Daniel Brettig has it right on Cricinfo when he points out that Test cricket is in deep shit in Australia at the moment. After the last few summers I have never been more worried about the game.
