It seems that England have the harder choices to make. They won handsomely at Edgbaston, but that opening partnership is a mess - they can't hope to keep doing well when they're always one or two down for not many. If Lyth fails again at Trent Bridge and England lose or draw, they'll have no choice to drop him and bring in someone new for a series-deciding match at the Oval. There's obviously the question of who's going to replace Anderson as well, who they'll really miss. Australia on the other hand have easier decisions to make - or at least less controversial ones. No-one would turn a hair if we dropped Starc and/or Voges, though.

Re: selection - a lot of people have been dropped lately on account of other guys' form. You could argue that patience ran out for Watson on account of Haddin's poor form with the bat, and ditto Ballance and Bell. If we drop Starc it could owe as much to Hazlewood's lack of control at Edgbaston. It seems that balance is an issue for sides at the moment. Teams are being picked instead of players and I'm not sure it's the right way forward. This obsession everyone is having with all-rounders really isn't working, and none of them are justifying their places.

It'd be nice to see a good match at Trent Bridge, too! So far this series, the cricket has been pretty poor. Bayliss has called for consistency and he's dead right. England won handsomely at Edgbaston, but there was the small matter of a 405-run loss at Lord's. Are they so sure something like that isn't just around the corner? And as for Australia - well. I don't think I can remember seeing an Australian side playing as badly as they did at Edgbaston. Cardiff was only marginally better.

Brett Lee's dismissal of Flintoff was unbelievable. Beat him all ends up for pace and knocked back the off stump, the perfect fast bowler's wicket. We were about 20 runs short in the end, although that came care of Katich getting sawn off by Aleem Dar from a delivery that pitched outside leg and would have gone over the top. We were all dirty about that for weeks. Years!

England should do this reasonably easily, but we saw that they're still frightened of Johnson in the first dig. A couple of wickets from anyone, and a fired-up Mitch bowling to new batsmen could be interesting. It's really important to inflict SOME sort of damage going into the next match.
The Mongrel commented on 'THIRD TEST: EDGBASTON 'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01b7c7b7c280970b2015-07-31T12:12:35Z2015-07-31T12:12:37ZThe Mongrelhttp://profile.typepad.com/6p01053622265e970bHowever you slice it, this match should just make it to the halfway mark. 2.5 days with rain assistance.
However you slice it, this match should just make it to the halfway mark.

Really, I can't get that horrible swipe of Smith's out of my head. It was that representative of all that is wrong with Aussies when faced with pitch movement and overhead conditions.

And like Obi Wan Kenobi, he's our only hope.

That said, in terms of actual overs bowled in the match we should still be somewhere in the evening session on day two. We still need to have another 22 overs before we play what would normally be two full days. We have also just managed to scrape past a full day's batting - we've now faced 91.4 overs for the loss of 17 wickets. Yay and woop.

Because I'm an eternal optimist, I'm still hoping that we can scrape a 60 or 70-run lead and take some of them down. A six wicket loss would be slightly less disgraceful than what we deserve. I suppose it's possible - all of Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon are capable of hanging around a bit, I suppose. It's unlikely though, and it makes very little difference anyway - we lost this match on day one.
