November 2002 and my very first post on chucking:
DROLL MODEL
During todays' lunch break in the cricket Ashley Mallett was giving a spot of coaching to an Under 17 hopeful:
"Just reach high and chuck it up there like Muralitharan"
Don't forget to bend your arm.
At the time it was hard to tell whether Rowdy was a Murali fan (he was, after all, on Channel Nine who historically have displayed a reluctance to broach chucking - maybe that is why he has rarely been back) or whether he had his tongue firmly wedged up his cheek. Today's cracking column will dispel any doubt:
Time for action on unfair bowling
Cricket Australia has a golden opportunity to take the lead on the world stage and to show the International Cricket Council that Australia won't tolerate unfairness.
If, for some bizarre reason (your bias or meal ticket or both) you are still in any doubt, you missed the noteworthy inclusion in Rowdy's mooted Bowling Action Review panel.
Ashley Mallett has always been one of my favourite cricketers ; now he's one of my favourite cricket writers.
Big ups to Ashley!
Make that big STRAIGHT ups to Ashley.
