Andrew Wu:
ENGLAND is not only aiming to retain the Ashes this summer in Australia, it is looking to hold on to the tiny urn for another two decades.
"We're looking to become the world No.1 team and you do that by winning constant series and consistent series," Broad said.
"We want England to be a place that's feared to be toured like Australia is. We want to do something like Australia did to us for 20 years. They used to come over to England every time and win, then clean up in Australia as well. That's something we want – to be part of a legacy with this England cricket team. You can learn a huge amount from what the Australians did and have done and built a legacy with their team.
"That's what we want to do. We're not happy with winning one Ashes series or two on the bounce, we want to go as many years as possible and that can only start with us performing well this winter."
Nothing wrong with Boyzone Broad aiming high, but does anyone seriously believe England will hold the Ashes for 20 years? Even with Australia currently playing dreadful cricket, England will need luck to hold the Ashes for another two months.
The Ashes look like they will be decided by the famed "big moments" and on current luck, those will go to England. Hussey drops a sitter in gully; Haddin, Clarke & Watson botch a run out (and then laugh about it); Billy Bowden loses his bottle at a crucial moment, again; Jimmy Anderson comes on to bowl just as thick black clouds roll over the Gabba. Sigh. I'm already looking for scapegoats and reasons why Australia lost.
Boyzone sounds suspiciously like he wants to start talking dynasties. Well, I had my say here. You need luck and superstar players. England don't got 'em. And apart from anything else, if Australia spent the next 20 years in the toilet, where are all the international coaches going to come from? It is unlikely Zimbabwe will pick up the slack.
I can see it now: Herschelle Gibbs coaching the 2013 England squad, filled to the brim with ex-Saffers, to another Ashes Bokwash.
