Sideshow Roy Symonds' contract to keep off the booze appears to have worked in reverse, turning him into a binge guzzler:
Andrew Symonds: Why I hated playing international cricket
In the end it was not the alcohol that got to Andrew Symonds, but the pressure. It was the training regime, the media demands, sponsorship appearances and interview requests. And, more than anything else, it was the special contract he signed with Cricket Australia forbidding him from having a drink.
Roy... "I wasn't having fun anymore. I wasn't enjoying it. I felt like I was in a cage. Always under the microscope."
Is this the life of the modern playing group, working under 'the process'?
If the fun and love of the game is taken away, then so is the soul. Sport without character - such is the professional era.
Merv would never get a game today!

Merv wouldn't be able to fit in the cricket, what with all the selecting and tour groups.

Perhaps he should get a contract with CUB, so that he can finally swear off the grog.
