Even Stud Johnson, who took a few poles, got a lot of them with textbook shit-gets-wickets. India looks like they targeted him for special treatment a la Dizzy in his last Ashes, but in this case Studly pinched a few wickets. The Indians are unlikely to grant him such largesse next time. Unless they are stupid. Mind you, hand-in-hand with the Indian's rashness is the fact that Johnson is spraying them less, so there's a chance the Indians were genuinely unready for his improvement. They shouldn't have been. Stud bowled a lot of shit balls last summer, but he bowled some very good ones, too.

Lee can't rely solely on bounce on Indian pitches and needs to get the ball tailing. And Clark, while accurate, likes a pitch with zest.

Recently, while watching the Fox highlights of the 2006/07 Ashes, I was reminded of how important McGrath was when he got rid of Cook in the second innings in Perth. McGrath had a knack of doing that. We need Lee, Clark or Johnson to develop the same knack.

Still, the longer the series goes, the greater the chance of us facing a dodgy track and getting rolled by the Injun spinners.

The notion of taking one's chances was never better exemplified than in the AFL Grand Final. Geelong did all the attacking, but failed to capitalise. Hawthorn eventually got their turn at the momentum and made Geelong pay for their earlier profligacy. It looks like this series may go the same way.

Anyone know what the next pitch is like?
Samir Chopra commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef010535fa9835970b2008-10-14T14:52:04Z2008-11-19T01:42:22ZSamir Choprahttp://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~bcfoss/DLMonty, Tony, Russ: Fair points.
Incidentally, the figures for the Kumble/Bhajji combo also make for interesting reading. White isn't a great option, but, as was said earlier, he is probably the best option we have unless we go for four quicks, plus he bats alright and fields well.

But White probably isn't going to pick up more than two or three a game. Problem is, Paper Cut probably won't either, which, barring a miracle from Pup (or the Kat, who strangely wasn't bowled?) means Lee, Clark and Johnson are being asked to carry a hell of a load.

The other things to note are that 1) everyone around here is very pessimistic and 2) Australia outplayed India for long periods of this match and didn't win. In fact, in the end, they didn't get close to winning. If you can't press for victory when you are on top then you are doomed to lose eventually. That's a problem.
Vindicate commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef0105360205e4970c2008-10-14T09:25:09Z2008-11-19T01:42:37ZVindicateAnyone else catch the post-match chat between one M.Waugh and the other guy who does the sport on 513?
I'm not sure if Mark was watching the same game as the rest of us if he claims Australia played well enough to "deserve to win".

Australia's effort was pedestrian at best, sure Punter and Mr.Cricket made handy runs in the first innings but that was thrown away when they decided to treat Rollerboy and Zaheer like tail-enders.
Fielding was also ordinary for the most part, I'll give Haddin some benefit in that it would have been a shit of a track to keep on, especially when some bowlers are spraying it all over the shop - but that drop on the fifth day is a bit inexcusable, you get that much glove on it and you should be taking it at this level.
Bowlingwise, Binga was reasonable, hopefully will get some reverse swing happening later in the series but lack of bounce will hurt him badly, Mitch Johnson was a bit of an enigma, terrible one over, brilliant the next - hopefully he'll get his shit together and come good.
Papercut didn't look dangerous really, and I'm still yet to be convinced of his ability to take wickets (or make runs for that matter). Wonder if he's in the side only to fill in the obligatory "all-rounder" role.
Stuey Clarke seemed decent as usual in all of the 2 minutes we saw him in action, here's hoping his elbow comes good otherwise we are going to struggle.

As for Pup and White, considering one is a part-time spinner he's getting an awful lot of overs at the expense of the other. Give White a chance to get some decent amount of overs under his belt I say.
Tony T commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef010535fa9893970b2008-10-14T01:26:21Z2008-11-19T01:43:25ZTony Thttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/agb/Mysore Mike was definitely MOTM. Warne was a master, not just with where he pitched the ball, but with his whole in-your-face demeanour. The same might have been said about Sir Loin of Beef. He was a master of shit gets wickets because he got so far up the batsman's hooter that the batsman was gulled into a shit shot. White and Clarke lack the ability to influence the contest in that way. Sure, they can both put the ball roughly in the right spot, most of the time anyway, but neither has the ability to pinch a wicket with their "personality" the way Warne did. That goes to "bullying" - for want of a less belligerent term - the umpires, too.

The same comparison might be made about Magilla. While he spun the ball a mile and bowled the right areas, when he tried to go in-your-face, he just looked like a dick.
m0nty commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef010535fa9831970b2008-10-14T01:01:56Z2008-11-19T01:42:20Zm0ntyhttp://www.fanfooty.com.au/blogSamir, the value of Warne was not just in the wickets he took, but the pressure he applied, which just...
Samir, the value of Warne was not just in the wickets he took, but the pressure he applied, which just as often resulted in wickets at the other end as runs dried up. Some good batting on both sides ; some careless batting on both sides ; some non-penetrative bowling on both sides ; some dropped catches on both sides. Katich stuck it up his detractors at AGB with a neat 100 for the match. Haddin still a little overawed by the company, which may account for his Rod Marsh ironglove impersonation.
Nice work from Rakesh, though: beautifully-timed deliveries, no spills, and he kept the commentators busy with his free-flowing style -- so I would definitely give him man of the match.
I actually feel a bit sorry for White now. He obviously cares a lot about his cricket, judging from the genuine emotional reaction to getting Tendulkar. Makes me wonder a bit about what I feel anecdotally is a historical underbowling of Australia Test debutantes in their maiden test. Sure, he's your 5th- or 6th-best bowler, but giving him his first decent spell 40 overs into each innings was a bit rich.

Also, from what I saw of Pup today, he stunk it up. Full tosses and long hops abounded, and then bounded to the boundary. That's the difference between a real spinner and a part-timer. We're going to enter into a long dark chai-time of the soul in the subcontinent if we don't find a spinner who can bowl sides out on the 5th day.
Big Ramifications commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef010535fa982c970b2008-10-13T08:35:57Z2008-11-19T01:42:18ZBig RamificationsMuff Merkle!
Muff Merkle!
Tony T commented on 'FIRST TEST: CHEATY MONKEYS'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef0105360205b8970c2008-10-13T06:33:42Z2008-11-19T01:42:17ZTony Thttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/agb/Would another twenty minutes batting would have made a difference?
Me here.

Do you realise this is the first Test this century where I have not seen a single ball bowled. And I still won't get a look today.

Occasional grabs from the radio, regular texts and the odd update via CroquetInfo are all I've managed.

Did I miss anything? Well, yes, judging by the see-sawing nature so far.

Agree with Monty that India's fightback since Sat-dee noight "is the sign of a good side."

(Monty, I think of White more as your potential Jason Varitek.)

I would add that while India appear reluctant to fall in a heap like some other sides when confronted by Straya on the press, plenty of batsmen are getting starts.

Wonder if the Aussies will rue having their foot pulled off the accelerator. To win this series they really need to win here. If they don't they face the prospect of - How can I put this politely? - responsive pitches without the comfort of a series lead. Surely, the longer the series goes, the more chance there is of their bowlers running though us at least once.

Now here in Bangaloru we have to chase a win. The commentators, from the little I've heard and read, are frantically talking up a dec. Certainly there is more of a case for it here than in Adelaide when they were gagging for a stupid closure, but FFS - NGASAEB. The last thing we need is for P-Cut, Braddin and the tail to get out going the doctor, thus setting India a "gettable", "challenging" or worst case, "generous" chase.

Jon Pierik:

Whether Ricky Ponting declares before play or allows Watson and Haddin to bat on briefly is a point of debate.

Apart from anything else, he was thusly shafting some quite worthy candidates in Flintoff, Kallis and even the ranga Shaun Pollock. White, to get back to the point, is the sort of all-rounder who is not quite of Test standard in any discipline.

Mont, I still reckon McArdle is onto something. White is the best of an ordinary bunch after the retirements of Warne, SCG and the Tongue, and the injury to Nyce Bryce. And what he's written in the past is too pragmatic to be dismissed as state parochialism. And and, White is one of those "cricketers" - you know, the sort of bloke who can bat, bowl, field, catch and influence procedings - who could well develop into a gun international player.
