Lieutenant Columbo's first name is Phillip. Or is it?
Columbo's First Name and The Supreme Court Columbo's first name was the subject of a $300 million lawsuit, in the 1980s, that was appealed all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States.
This I didn't know, but it fits. Columbo's character was based on Petrovich in Crime and Punishment
My brother swears the one with John Cassavetes as Raskolnikoff ... err ... a classical impressario is one of the great TV episodes.Richard Levinson & William Link, who created the Columbo character, modeled him after Petrovitch, the detective who appeared in the 1866 Russian novel Crime and Punishment written by Feodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky.
No, i figure Columbo's 1st name must be of Eyetalian origin. No, wait a minute, just one more thing, i reckon it was Frankie.. Is this not the same thing as Colombo's oft mentioned but never seen wife ? Did she have a name and was she EVER seen in an episode- i don't think so.
Anyway, Colombo's mannerisms and raincoat must have seriously bored a whole generation of 70's tv watchers. I've caught some episodes and just want to strangle the bloke. Didn't they make some more in the 90's ??

Columbo is a fantastic show, one of the few American detective shows that holds up from the 70s. The main problem is though, as I see it anyway, you always know who did it from the start. However, that's the deal with Crime And Punishment too and the show's all about sweating out the do-badder. A great show.

Columbo had alot of cool guests, I'm tempted to get cable just to catch them all again. Johnny Cash is another great guest turn.
Peter Falk and Cassavetes together in Husbands is one of my favourite films.

Right on the money, Amanda.
Falk was in excellent with Cassavetes in an Italian film called Machine Gun McCain. I like it mainly because it has a terrific Morricone soundtrack. And Falk's in Castle Keep, a fantastic war fillum.
Cassavetes is a gun. Husbands also has one of my favoutite actors, Ben Gazarra. Too many great films to mention here, but I love Don Siegel's remake of the Killers.
By the way, Coach from Cheers directed the Columbo with Cassavetes in it. How about them apples?
