From today's Herrald Sun. One wonders what RRupert would say.
Gasnier fined $50,000AXED NSW Origin centre Mark Gasnier last night was hit with a $50,000 slap across the face from St George Illawarra over the obscene voicemail scandal.
The severe punishment is the heaviest infringement handed out by the Dragons and equals the biggest individual fine served up to an NRL player.
Wests Tigers halfback Craig Field was given equivalent punishments when fined $50,000 for recreational drug use in 2001 and the same again for assaulting a fan in Tigers Leagues club later that year. The Dragons heavy-handed approach does not extend to the playing field though, with chief executive Peter Doust confirming he had informed coach Nathan Brown that the contrite centre was available for selection ahead of tomorrow night's match with Brisbane.
Gasnier has trained with the Dragons for the past two days, with coach Brown now expected to include him in the starting side against the Broncos.
"The severity of the financial penalty imposed on Mark reflects the level of our disappointment with his actions while in State of Origin camp last week," Doust said.
"The Dragons have high expectations of our players to professionally represent our club and the sport of rugby league both on and off the field. This behaviour falls well short of those expectations."
