Was Tennis Australia on the deuce?
Yesterday's mistake with the Spanish Notional Anthem was stupido y penoso, but what an overreaction as the Spanish fly off the handle:
THE Spanish Government has demanded a federal inquiry into yesterday's right royal stuff-up at the Davis Cup opening ceremony. The Spanish team, the country's Sports Minister, its ambassador to Australia and hundreds of patriotic fans were outraged when trumpeter James Morrison played the wrong national anthem at the opening ceremony. The tune, Himno De Riego, has not been the anthem for more than 60 years. It had been the official theme of the 1931-39 Second Republic, when King Alfonso, 13, was forced off the throne. No, it doesn't warrant an inquiry. On second thoughts, we are in Braxtoria. Anyway, it's happened before, and without the threat of any international rumpusness:
Zali Steggall (AUS)And, unlike Barcelona in 2000, no one got pick-pocketed, mugged, bashed, abused or stabbed:
They played the wrong anthem when she won Australia's first gold medal at World Skiing Championships.
But it was on Los Ramblas (the famous city street) that many Fanatics will have their clearest memory. With over 100 Fanatics mugged, stabbed or beaten up by the locals that weekend it is difficult to say a good word about the place. One of the most picturesque cities on earth is still talked about by many Fanatics present that weekend as a grubby little arm pit. And its not just the Fanatics, a large group of Australian officials including family members of the team where pick pocketed & abused with Albert Costa getting up front the bench & directly telling a wife of one of the Australian Davis Cup team to "shut up & sit down bitch" when she was cheering for Australia.
