They tried that on Monday Night Football on ESPN and it was a dismal failure. The commentator (Mike Tirico) hated the journalist (Tony Kornheiser), the journalist didn't know what his role was supposed to be, and the special comments man (Joe Theisman) was terrible.
With better personnel, it might work, but you'd want the chemistry to be first rate.
