No way.
Kepler was a bit before my time, but as analogies go I'm sure it's platinum gold. I was trying to think of a more recent player - there are guys out there that only seem to score difficult runs, and never easy runs. That's what happened to Steve Waugh towards the end of his career; because we were so dynamite at the time we didn't need his backs-to-the-wall stuff and he lost his purpose a bit. Laxman? Chanderpaul, maybe? But those guys can lay claim to being genuinely great players, which is not something you'd be prepared to describe Quaggy as. There are definitely players out there that were just a bit "meh" for a lot of the time, but when an unwinnable, undrawable situation came along, they were just nailed to the crease.
Tony Tea commented on 'THIRD TEST: JHARKHAND STATE CRICKET ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL STADIUM COMPLEX (JSCAISC, FOR SHORTISH)'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01bb0985d84b970d2017-03-21T10:50:18Z2017-03-21T10:50:18ZTony Teahttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/cricket/Not his best work, sizzlemum.
Not his best work, sizzlemum.
Big Rammer's mum commented on 'THIRD TEST: JHARKHAND STATE CRICKET ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL STADIUM COMPLEX (JSCAISC, FOR SHORTISH)'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01b7c8e29f6e970b2017-03-21T10:15:54Z2017-03-21T10:15:54ZBig Rammer's mumEither way, Carrot, how about my boy's solid platinum Kepler Wessels analogy? I've said it before as well, he's been treated as shabbily by the selectors as anyone in recent years, and yet his brother has been given free ride after free ride for doing absolutely f-all, although hopefully we're done with that, now.

There are a couple of things I like about Quaggy. A couple of them are pretty stupid, but I'll list them anyway. I met his Dad once when I was a kid. He was an absolute top bloke, and didn't mind being badgered by a cricket-mad 12 year-old. I know Swampy and Quaggy are two separate people, but that's by-the-by. He's also Western Australian, as am I, so that counts for something. Most of all, though - he scores important runs. He's one of those guys with a relatively modest record that really gutses it out when the chips are down. To a point, anyone can smash a quick hundred on a flat deck when the bowlers are tired (Dave Warner, I'm looking at you), but a player that can do what Quaggy did yesterday is a really important asset. The tyranny of that, of course, is that despite what metric CA might profess to be judging their players on, I'm sure he'll get dropped at some point soon for someone more fashionable.

There might be something in the always-on-the-verge-of-getting-dropped thing, by the way. Maybe every side needs someone that's playing for their career more often than not. Paul Collingwood springs to mind. And Justin Langer, before he started opening.
Big Ramifications commented on 'THIRD TEST: JHARKHAND STATE CRICKET ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL STADIUM COMPLEX (JSCAISC, FOR SHORTISH)'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01b8d26cfa8f970c2017-03-21T06:48:06Z2017-03-21T06:48:06ZBig RamificationsCarrot, Philsgone, are you guys slightly irked that Smarsh probably did just enough in the 2nd innings to save his...
Carrot, Philsgone, are you guys slightly irked that Smarsh probably did just enough in the 2nd innings to save his bacon, featuring in a 124 run partnership with Handscomb to save the Test? From what I can glean from your comments this series, you aren't exactly his biggest fans....

Reminds me of Kepler Wessels in 1985. I sorta liked him as an opener, but I wasn't a huge fan, and I thought it was time for him to go after the 1st home Test vs. the West Indies, having averaged 8.33 in his previous 10 innings. I reckon he was lucky to be retained for the 2nd Test.... He scored a globe in the 1st innings to make absolutely certain he was on his LAST chance.... Then top scored with 61 in the 2nd innings - barely enough to hold his spot, but history says it was enough.

He repaid the SELECTORS' FAITH, by the way, scoring 431 @86.2 in the remaining 3 Tests of the series, including 3 big 50s [98, 90, and 70] and 173 in the final match.

Going into the 3rd Test vs. India, Smarsh's previous 10 innings weren't as bad as Wessels' [he had scored 553 runs @ 55.3] but his 4 innings series average was 22.75, so it's probably safe to say the Test just gone was also his last chance.
It'll be pretty galling to have lost by an innings after the first innings heroics here and the last Test, and it'll be 3-1 after the last Test, as a rampant India flogs a weary Aus attack. Captains might have a dig at each other in press conferences, and journalists might ask leading questions, but I get the feeling that teams exist in a bit of a bubble during matches. That's not to say that players aren't reading things in hotel rooms, but most players I've heard speak about this stuff say that they actively avoid media about cricket, much like an actor might avoid reading reviews. It was interesting to hear Jarrod Kimber make time yesterday in his otherwise usually fun and light "Polite Enquiries" segment to lambast the quality of reporting that has gone on during the series though, and to say that the game deserves better.

I didn't hear anything directly Laxman said, but Jesus, if he made a remark about Phil Hughes on account of Maxwell grabbing his shoulder, he's a prize turkey. Frankly, anyone saying that Maxwell was "mocking" anyone is a prize turkey. Someone dives and hurts themselves, someone dives later on, gets up and has a bit of a laugh: "don't worry boys, I'm ok". This is something I have always hated about the Indian team and culture surrounding it - they desperately want to take offence from everything, and actively look for opportunites to do so. Wankers.

That's above and beyond whether it's calculated or not Nick, and it could well be. Either way, it's obnoxious dickheadery. Just play/watch/write about the game as it is, you bunch of idiots. Instead, India have been masterful - on and off the field. Firstly, their pitches have been unashamedly Indian - and fair enough. Secondly, they have united behind their captain, who has hammered Australia's achilles heel - the media classes propensity to pile on, on their own team. 'Smith abused the DRS', 'Smith cheats', 'Maxwell made fun of Kohli's injury'. Thirdly, Laxman beautifully slipped in a dig at Phil Hughes, comparing Maxwell's alleged mockery of Kohli's shoulder 'injury' with mocking Hughes' death, while our media fifth column claimed he was 'misunderstood'. Fourthly, Sutherland has had to fight to avoid 'wild dogs II', which hasn't allowed Kohli to be censured for his allegations. I've played enough cricket to know that you know whether you've been gloved or not. Could it have been a spike from somewhere else? Still, it maybe evens out some bad luck we had with DRS earlier- provided that he DIDN'T hit it, of course.

Props to Ravi Shastri for backing the technology and saying that the evidence was clear.
Cummins to Ashwin, OUT, they are appealing for a glove, and they review it after it has not been given. Brute of a bouncer. Right at his head, Ashwin looks to sway out of its line and throws his hands in front of his face. And it takes the glove as it passes the hand. What amazing bowling this is. This has to be reversed. A nasty bouncer. Ashwin is not happy, but if he watches the replays in the dressing room, he will see the evidence
Patard commented on 'THIRD TEST: JHARKHAND STATE CRICKET ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL STADIUM COMPLEX (JSCAISC, FOR SHORTISH)'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01b7c8e1a270970b2017-03-18T10:16:59Z2017-03-18T10:16:59ZPatardBrilliant!
