Jeez Brett Lee was quick on his day. Mostly gun-barrel straight, though. Russ referred to him as Steve Waugh's Patrick Patterson awhile ago, and it's a good comparison to make. Fast, hostile, scary, but being quick alone isn't really enough to be world class.
Carrot commented on 'CP'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01a3fd3eddf0970b2014-08-02T15:29:39Z2014-08-02T15:29:39ZCarrothttp://www.scottwellstead.comI've always wanted to see extended footage of that day's play. I exchanged text messages throughout the series with a mate in Australia and I particularly remember him sending something like "wow, best bouncer of the series!" when Lee apparently nearly took KP's head off. I've always wanted to see it.

Back then KP needed to justify his talent, and played freakish innings in both whites and coloured clothing. Sadly it didn't last long; once he'd established himself as a senior bat he played for himself and it was an insult to the game and everyone who had stuck their necks out to put him there in the first place. I can remember one particular ODI hundred in the 2007 WC where he took what felt like 30 balls to go from 90 to 100 when his team needed him to accelerate. It was around then that I went from hating him to REALLY hating him.

There is no questioning his talent, though.
Big Ramifications commented on 'CP'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01a3fd3ed896970b2014-08-02T14:45:20Z2014-08-02T14:45:20ZBig Ramificationshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQiVUM9cYmwSpeaking of "match winners".... a nice segue back to the subject of this thread.... as much as I try/tried to...
Speaking of "match winners".... a nice segue back to the subject of this thread.... as much as I try/tried to hate the guy, KP's maiden ton in the 5th Test of the 2005 Ashes won England the series.

Maiden ton. Big ol' purple golf ball bruise on the ribs. Banged up shoulder. Bashed fingers.

There was a brief Brett Lee spell where I thought KP was completely rattled. Wore 2 or 3 thunderbolts to the body and gloves. Got the feeling he was totally poopin' his dacks out there. I was certain he was a gonner. Maybe hang around for a few more balls and meekly put the cue back in the rack. Never been surer.

But I've got to solemnly dips me lid in the direction of the switch hitting, stupid hairstyle havin', cocky show pony Vark ring-in. Almost 10 years on and it's still one of the best fighting innings I've seen in my life - and an Ashes series clincher to boot.

I don't put him anywhere close to being the second-greatest though, and I'll apply my Tendulkar argument here: not a match-winner. People will scream at me until they're hoarse that I'm wrong about Tendulkar and maybe they have a point, but I reckon I've got one about Fat Jacques. Too selfish and defensive with the bat, didn't ever really push the game along until (much) later in his career. Was a big part of the reason why until recently South Africa were good at not losing matches but not so good at winning them.

If the poms edge sneak a win it'll bring the curries back down to earth, and a few batfest-on-a-road draws to tie the series up 1-1 will be exactly what they deserve. Both sides seem more interested in not losing the game than taking a risk to win it, and it's exactly that kind of boring, negative captaincy that makes people question whether Test cricket really is the premier form of the game.

Then we get Australia vs South Africa series, a perfect showcase of hard, aggressive, exciting test cricket that we all love, and yet only three games!
I must admit to really liking him and his writing. Part of his schtick is playing the clown somewhat which probably doesn't endear him to everyone, but his knowledge of the game seems to be second to none, and these inter-connected little essays he writes are fantastic. Pietersen, Trott, Swann, Prior gone, at least one of Cook and Bell to follow, surely. Question marks have been raised about the bowling, too - apparently Anderson bowled angry, self-indulgent, short filth in the second dig which is just the sort of thing you'd expect from him. They won't drop him or Broad, though.

Still, they've completely imploded. And yes, I think the 5-0 has got to them. They've been shockingly vulnerable against the short ball lately, to the point that the Sri Lankans were bouncing them out. They''ve either been bounced out or got out hooking/pulling, which is exactly what was happening in The Ashes.

England went to stumps four down last night and admittedly that probably put India at least one wicket ahead of the game, but come on - that was no reason to say that the match was effectively over. There's no way that the Australian press, team and cricketing public would have peddled so much doom and gloom. Even Jarrod Kimber said that it was effectively a foregone conclusion in Polite Enquiries.

As it is now though, they've got two set batsmen at the crease and two and a half sessions to score 168 runs - only another 20 or 30 runs and you could say they were favourites to win. I'm convinced that it's the lack of optimism in the English game - and perhaps even English sport in general - that often holds them back.

It was the same sort of thing with the "broken fucken arm" incident in Brisbane (which I just saw a video of on YouTube before I came here). There is such hypocrisy in the idea that sport should be squeaky-clean and homogonised and that everyone should "set an example for all the kiddies back home". Professional sport everywhere is played by ruthless, hard-nosed people that play to win. Sometimes they don't like each other, and shock, horror, sometimes they say nasty things to one another, too. There can be no sin in admitting that.

Furthermore, Andrew Strauss is a respected figure in the cricketing community with cred coming out of his ears, and if he thinks that Pietersen's a cunt then there's probably a reasonable argument to suggest that he actually IS one. I genuinely believe that the game would have been better off without Pietersen, and the fact that there's still a discussion going on about whether he should be playing for England completely bewilders me. If it takes an on-air slip of the tongue to get a genuinely honest opinion out of someone on that point then so be it. The only thing that Strauss should be apologising for is the language he used on-air, but never in a million years should he be apologising to Pietersen, or anyone else for that matter.
gillysgone commented on 'CP'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef01a511dc1533970c2014-07-06T22:14:17Z2014-07-06T22:14:17ZgillysgoneThe Guardian wrote the word in inverted commas as "cunt", so they were fairly accurate in their recounting of the...
The Guardian wrote the word in inverted commas as "cunt", so they were fairly accurate in their recounting of the story.
