Hughes and North made runs, Siddle and Johnson were brilliant, Hilfy bowled well and tightly without reward, McDonald did the job he was picked for, even if we won't always want that job. As you said, that means the selection worries are the form of Hussey and the form and fitness of Lee, Clark, Watson and Symonds.

Only the last couple of slots are hard to pick. Assume that the current XI go, plus McGain, Bollinger (assuming he is fit), and a reserve keeper (tough choice here, Ronchi, Wade, Paine and Hartley all have claims). Then a spare bat, probably Jaques. That leaves two slots, maybe one, for bowlers and/or all-rounders. The conservative choice is Lee and Clark, but it is hard to see them making it when the emphasis is youth, though Clark would probably be useful if fit. Symonds has probably done his dash, so Watson, if he does well this weekend, Geeves if he gets a game in the third test, maybe Magoffin, maybe Krejza or Hauritz, maybe another bat (Ferguson?) or maybe a bolter. However, unless the selectors have a collective brain failure or there are injuries, you can probably guarantee that the XI lining up in Cardiff will be picked from the same XI who played at Durban plus McGain.

They've been playing too well (collectively) for the previous group of struggling incumbents to walk back in, and there aren't enough games before then for others to stake their claim.
RT commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef011168e47678970c2009-03-11T23:59:27Z2009-03-11T23:59:27ZRTAgree Don, SA quick bowlers really underperformed with their line and length all over the shop and Harris shown up...
Agree Don, SA quick bowlers really underperformed with their line and length all over the shop and Harris shown up for what he is, an honest trundler who is not even close to anything approaching dangerous.

Agree also that we shouldn't get too carried away with the Ashes coming up. We'll now go in as firm favourites with the press all over the Young Guns tag. That's a concern.

Haddin is a worry. He'll drop a catch soon that REALLY matters, like KP on 0. Hussey a worry too, which is hard to believe given his confident, immaculate style of only 6 months ago. He's now a tentative, prodder looking to get out. A century for him in a dead rubber to get some breathing space? Fly Dean Jones over for that one.

Some really interesting selection issues for the Ashes. The most contentious for 20 years. Do they pick any of Lee, Clark, Watson, Symonds? Do they pick only 1 spinner? Do they go for a Greg Campbell type bolter? Great when there is some real intrugue around the Ashes touring side rather than Taylor, McGrath, Warne, Waugh....yawn we know the side already thank you.

Great effort when all said and done beating a top side on their own turf. Good to sit back for Test 3 without the pressure on. I watched / listened to the 2nd test by pressing the Foxtel red button and pressing Crowd, which just has crowd noise and no commentary at all. Takes a while to get used to but really enjoyable and not getting annoyed every few overs with stupid or generally boring comments. It would of course be an even better way to watch it if the crowd was half decent. And to think SA cricket are trying to take the Boxing Day test off us. Give me a break. Let's hope Fox do a joint thing for the Ashes with SBS like last time and have the red button in use.
The Don has risen commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef011168dcfc10970c2009-03-11T22:16:32Z2009-03-11T22:16:32ZThe Don has risenI am saddened by the Aardvarks.
They do have the best side in Test cricket but ability on paper should be transferred to the field.

It was brilliantly in Australia.
The bowlers ( who always win series batsman never do) bowled very well.)

They have two quality pitches in SA which were perfectly suited to their bowlers but they bowled badly.
Steyn at this stage should have at least 15 wickets. Morkel and Ntini should have 10 wickets between them.

Their length and line have been abysmal.

They appear to not like the responsibility of being favourites nor do they quickly learn.

Unless both happen quickly then they will not gain the best team status they should.
Their team is youngish and they have plenty of talented youngsters coming up.

Very interesting.

I am not getting excited by this win for the Aussies.

Yes a miracle has happended and Johnson can swing the ball and so has now become a test bowler.
The rest are merely honest.

Our batsmen who usually get cement feet when the ball swings will find the ball swinging all day in the UK.

the Poms do not have a strong batting lineup but it won't be as weak as it was in 2005!

I would love to bowl to the Aussies.
I will be surprised if Hughes kicks on in the UK given his technical deficiencies, Katich will always be vulnerable in the UK, Hussey is batting like a dead man walking, Clarke is yet to dominate a series.

We again rely on Ponting.

Still we are playing the Poms and so we must be favourites.
Tony T commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef011279479cd728a42009-03-11T12:06:16Z2009-03-11T12:07:15ZTony Thttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/agb/OK. Because, the name has the comment id, so all you need to do is change the "#" in that link to "?cid=" and it should link through. If you can capture the text after the "#", you can also add a "#comment-" and that text a second time to direct link the comment. For some reason beyond me, there is no Typepad instruction that will link to a comment after the first page. Thus, you can link to any comment in the first 50, but after that it's no go.

The best bet looks like getting rid of pagination, but I'm not up with the most recent code which includes a lot of remote modules which I have no access to.
Siddle was grimacing a little. Whether it is worth resting him for the final test I'm not sure. It isn't for a almost two weeks.

As for the referrals, the ultimate system would give the on-field umpires a pda they can call up 3d replays of in visual, computer generated and hotspot mode. Hotspot especially needs 4-6 fixed cameras, and would display better as the change in heat, not the actual heat - essentially you'd see streaks from impacts overlaid on a real time replay. I wish, anyway.
Tony T commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef0112794701c028a42009-03-11T03:43:42Z2009-03-11T03:43:42ZTony Thttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/agb/These comments seem a bit fvcked up when you cross the 50.
Currently, when using the referral system, there are too many directives the umpires must follow.

If they are going to keep the system - and I can't that happening - there needs to be a simplification:

~~ "That out?"

~~ "Yep."

~~ "Batsman, you're out. Get lost."

Or:

~~ "That out?"

~~ "Nope."

~~ "Batsman, you're not out. Play on."

Or:

~~ "That out?"

~~ "Can't tell."

~~ Umpire goes with what he originally thought.

Couple of things I noticed in today's Australian:

Sky's the limit for cricket young guns as Australia beats South Africa

Siddle pushed through obvious pain in his first over of the fifth morning, to have de Villiers (84) caught behind as the Australians closed in on the series victory.

Australia's fielding was sloppy in the final innings. Kallis was dropped twice and Brad Haddin fumbled Jean-Paul Duminy on six but it was a difficult chance.

1. I didn't see Siddle in "obvious" pain.

2. The Haddin fumble off Duminy was a slightly-harder-than-regulation chance, it was not difficult.

Perhaps Haddin should have tried to catch it with his thighs.
Adsy commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef011168d1220e970c2009-03-10T20:17:18Z2009-03-10T20:17:18ZAdsyI guess that's what I mean Russ - if the umpire on the field gets it so blatantly wrong as...
I guess that's what I mean Russ - if the umpire on the field gets it so blatantly wrong as to ask for the LBW to be looked at when it was clearly caught behind, the third umpire must be able to say "well, hes smashed it to the keeper, so lets go with caught behind instead". No 'double jeopardy' rule in cricket I guess.

Also theres no problem if the ump on the field says to the third "lets go a bit each way here, check for the LBW because thats what I gave out but also for an edge because it carried to a fielder". Hardly professional, and a bit hard on the batsman who gets given for LBW, refers it, gets off and then gets pinged for hitting it.
Tony T commented on 'SECOND TEST: LONG IN THE YOOTH'tag:typepad.com,2003:6a00d8341cb34453ef011168d0c182970c2009-03-10T17:47:36Z2009-03-10T18:32:59ZTony Thttp://aftergrogblog.blogs.com/agb/Last night must have really taken it out of me. The fielding was dodgy today, and there were long drawn out moments where we looked a bit flat, if not tired. But they kept at it, never lost control, never countenanced any other result. Not having to play Smith was handy, perhaps even the difference between a win and a draw, but those are the breaks. How good are Johnson and Siddle starting to look? Raw, but Warne and McGrath were raw once.

Good cricket to watch, good team to play. The most satisfying series win, for me, since we rolled the Varks away in '97.
