Mate, it's been shockingly boring at times, but you're right - Sunday was great cricket. My gripe is that it may foreshadow the rest of the series. I can't see the other tests all playing out like this, but I can see the Poms trying to play them all out like this. There were murmurs of them playing the entire tour for a draw even before they got here.
I suppose that they may have regained some confidence here - Harmless looked to have improved his action yesterday, Piggy (sorry, Fanie) looked bloody impressive (but I thought he was a bit of a sleepr up in Brissie, and he was also good in Pomgolia last year). Pies isn't as good as his double ton would suggest ( I reckon I'd have gotten at least a ton), but you can't take it away from him. Hopefully Strauss'll go early today and we can continue to fuck with his head. The upshot of all this may be that the Poms actually try to win a game - they have to now, just to get their drawn series.
Otherwise, it looks like Boycott is back, and I hate the fact that Straya's natural game is being hampered by the old-style Poms.

Tony.T

Today is ripe for Strauss to make a ton. I've suspected for some time he's got a bit of the Dead Rubber Dean Jones about him. No evidence, of course, it's just a hunch. Still, while you've got 'em down, keep 'em down, and all that. I hope he doesn't get a confidence boosting score today.

Doubtless, Fletch has decided the best way to beat Straya is to keep it tight. They didn't in the first test and got belted, they did it here and if it wasn't for Giles, sorry - The Gilo, we'd have been in the shithouse.

The biggest thing, though, is what's up with Flinty. If his ankle is worse than they're letting on and he misses tests, it would be very hard for them to hold on to the Ashes.

PS: Is the chance Vaughan might play a bit of a ruse?

Tony.T

Maybe Morgan Freeman wants to mess with Strauss, too.

13thMan

Morgan Freeman? I assume you mean the Calypso Clown, Bucknor? I like it!
Yep, Strauss gone, when he clearly wasn't - and as I type this, Bell goes too. He was out though. Nice team effort, that. it's early in the day, but I hope your prediction doesn't come to pass.
I, too, can see the Poms going cheap, then us coming in with, say, 180-200 to needed to win. And subsequently ballsing up the chase. We are justifiably famous for our low-run chases, aren't we?

13thMan

Warnie's revenge - Jaapie gone for 2! Now, surely we can't let The Pies get a start? And Flintoff'd have to be due for some sort of score wouldn't he? BTW - the Zimbabwean prick in charge claims that there's nothing really wrong with the ankle, just a little soreness. Maybe like McGrath? Hopefully he's understating the case - but at the least, it may mean that Flintoff will have to bowl sparingly for the rest of the tour. Of course, he's got a fair bit of recovery time before Perth.

Tony.T

Well, it looks like England declaring is out of the question. They'll be battening down the hatches now.

Tony.T

Fark! Five for! To quote CrookInfo: "My, my, England are in deep deep trouble."

ThirdCat

Indeed - a most excellent day to be 'stuck' at home, letting my kids have a 'special treat' with the television on (mute of course, but they don't care)

Bruce

Poms looking shaky. Warney fired up. A shaky chase of less than 200 is on the cards. I'm not sure I can handle the stress.

Tony.T

It's all CricInfo, ABC and text messages here for me at work.

Tony.T

Lunch.

A lowish last-day chase against a side that will probably bowl "good areas" to tight fields. It couldn't get any more painful.

Still, I think you'll find four wickets constitutes a "a few early palpitations". Prediction on track.

13thMan

Could be worth my while to wander in for the final session. I was thinking of giving myself the morning off, but didn't see the point. More fool me.
The weather is bloody awful - I don't know what the temp is, but it's hot (and warmed up earlier than I would have predicted). Fairly strong N-NW wind too - and it seems to be getting stronger. It wouldn't be too comfortable out there.

Tony.T

The afternoon is shaping up as a nightmare for Aussie cricket tragics. I almost hope the Poms are there at tea. Call me Benedict, but even if they were all-out in the first over after lunch and we were only chasing 120, I'd still be petrified with terror. Maybe even more than if we were chasing 200.

Tony.T

Jones! Out! I'm scared.

Mr Z

And Binga seems to have finally pulled his finger out - 2 for 22 off 12.

Tony.T

Marvellous figures, Richie.

Tony.T

The Gilo - GONE! Now I'm positively packing myself.

13thMan

Nice catching by The Chef - but it doesn't make up for his shithouse batting lately!
I'm too scared now to go in for the final session.

Tony.T

You're always best off at the ground. Watching these things on telly is agony.

Bruce

Can someone give me a hug? I'm starting to feel the pressure.

The thing Haydo has over Hungry Jacques is his mitts. A good catch to get rid of GOJO.

Tony.T

"On evidence to hand, talk of Warne going through the Poms is so much folderol."

Well, that's not quite right. What fool wrote that rubbish?

13thMan

"You're always best off at the ground. Watching these things on telly is agony." Too true.
Bye all - I'm off.

Tony.T

Yeah, at least at the game you're eating your fingernails with a bunch of other like-minded lunatics, walking around, moaning and groaning and feeling shouse in a group. Strength, sort of, in numbers. At home you just feel shouse and bark at the telly from the next room because you can't watch.

Scott Wickstein

Ye gods. A guy can't nap for fifteen minutes, can he?

Tony.T

BBC live text has it's moments:

Colly's been out there for more than two hours now for 16! I'm just off to smash my privates in a car door to divert me from this pain.

Tony.T

Message from my brother: "10 wickets - TV off the balcony." He lives on the 6th floor.

Should it happen - look out if you're travelling through Potts Point.

Tony.T

The Guardian's Over By Over isn't bad, either.

Tea should be any minute now, but because England are nine down it'll come when England are dismissed. Which will be any minute now. In fact it should have been: Collingwood played no stroke at a slider, and it looked stone dead. Steve Bucknor thought and thought and thought ... and said not-out. A shocking decision ... that was entirely vindicated by the replays, which showed it pitched outside leg.

Scott Wickstein

Okay now our boys are engaging in a kamikaze attempt to get the runs daring the Poms to run them out.

This can only end in tears.

Tony.T

Can't watch. Life is very, very cruel.

Scott Wickstein

Langer's out. Time to put up the shutters guys.

Tony.T

Yep. No need to be silly.

Scott Wickstein

NO NEED TO BE SILLY

Mr Z

Unless your name is Hayden I s'pose.

Arrgh - don't mess with the order now !!??!!

Mr Z

Ok, Langer and Hayden are both on my shit list.

Lee is not, nor is Clarke.

Martyn ... dunno. Not much of a vote of confidence by Punter to have Hussey in above him.

fm

Urghh.

Tim Blair just put up a post saying they can win it. Mozza!

Mr Z

It's those f***g Pies fans ...

Scott Wickstein

Now they are trying reverse sweeps.

Scott Wickstein

What's going to be really hilarious is when the game gets close either way, and Nine says 'Thanks for being with us, final scores in National Nine News'.

Mr Z

Or, in the off chance that we win, how much of a genius Punter is.

Tony.T

Stop that.

Scott Wickstein

Oh, silly Punter...

Tony.T

Yep.

Scott Wickstein

Oh, silly Marto...

Tony.T

This is killing me.

Mr Z

Ok, Martyn is now on my shit list.

Roger Hundleby

Well, England were bundled - just as I feared.

God, we've just got a fourth wicket. Maybe it will be The Great Escape again. Noth that we deserve it.

Scott Wickstein

I'm trying to listen to the ABC radio but they keep switching to the firefighters as there's fires going off round Adelaide. I give up.. time to endure Nein...

The Green Man

Faaaark me we just can't do things the easy way can we?!?!

Punter plays a little gem then gets a rush of blood to the head when he didn't need to and the Dumbian Martyn resurrects his innings against South Africa all those years ago...

He should get the BB crooked digit - OUT

Never to return.

Another 70-odd balls of spine-tingling terror I suppose...

*sigh*

P.S. Errr.. why didn't Gilly open with Hayden??

Mr Z

Bwa ha ha ha - Pietersen you are a TOOL!

Mr Z

Gilly didn't open because he would have lasted for only 2 or 3 balls, as opposed to .... oh dear!

Mr Z

Gilly didn't open because he would have lasted for only 2 or 3 balls, as opposed to .... oh dear!

Scott Wickstein

Coz Gnome's just as aggressive as Gilly these days.

So, when was the last time we saw a 7 in a Test match?

Mr Z

Sounds like one for Tony's trivia nights.

Mr Z

Harmison bowls a wide.

Flintoff on suicide watch.

Scott Wickstein

The locals are really giving the Barmy Army a bath which is good to see.

Hopefully they throw in some soap as well.

os

Mike Hussey for Prime Minister.

Bye bye Marto.

Tony.T

CrookI:

Ian Botham in full rant> "People are asking questions," he says. "I'm asking questions." He doesn't actually tell us what the question is though. He's almost in his Trueman "what's going off out there" mode. It's coming ...

Scott Wickstein

Well f*** my old boots... we did it!

Tony.T

Unwatchable! Agony! Brilliant!

Bruce

Well bugger me with a fish fork!!

England just lost their nerve. Clark and Warne's spell at the start of the day showed the intent and Lee gets it together for his spell.

Expect to see more partnerships of note between Punter and Shameless. A man could turn on the back of that sort of form.

4-1 with the Poms winning one of the dead rubbers. The mental scars of this will last a month or two.

woody

Oustanding over by over(sort of). Better than mine:

Woke at 2am, teletext says 70 odds for 4 - "We're fucked"

I'm amazed you citzens of the republic of Oz are as nervy as we unfortunate poms - you've won everything but the superbowl for 20 years.

Yobbo

I for one was surprised we didn't get the total without the loss of a wicket.
