STEVE Waugh's farewell Test turned ugly at the SCG yesterday when fans booed and jeered Australian leg-spinner Stuart MacGill.
Waugh was moved to point to the national emblem on his cap, indicating the team was representing the nation as best it could after the crowd sledged MacGill when he dropped the second of two chances.
Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist said later the crowd took a "soft, cheap option" in jeering the NSW player, who was christened Stuart Charles Glyndwr (SCG).
The volatile Sydney crowd, in a rare turn on a player from their state, started chanting "Warney, Warney" as MacGill chased the delivery to the boundary after the missed opportunity off V.V.S. Laxman, then on 177.
"It is a pretty easy option to boo – it is a pretty soft, cheap option to boo as well but we are trying our best," Gilchrist said.
MacGill's a big boy, he's well paid ... and he deserved it.
To quote the Friday crowd:
They spank him everywhere
