James Hopper claims that American football used to be tough. He should thank his lucky stars and stripes he never had to play sock-her against Elizabeth Lambert:
What was the ref doing?
Two deliberate trips; a punch in the back; a dangerous kick; a scything tackle; sitting on an opponent; extreme hair pulling; a smack in the face; a smack to the back of the head.
The penalty? A yellow card for arguing.
(Thanks for the football link, Brownie.)
My pal the (real) Professor at From A Left Wing has a worthy take on that too.
But I didnt watch that Amanda Byne soccer movie lats night on FTA-TV
The really tough chicks are the roller derby gals and there is a big rink-up in Ballarat 29th Nov called the Derbytantes Brawl. They're fast, rough and smart - one of them has written her Phd thesis on the sport.

You would have got six weeks for that in the AFL.
She can come and play for the Saints if she wants, we need a bit of mongrel in the side.

Let her loose on Tiff & Shirvo. They deserve it.

I wouldn't mind putting one thru her.

Funny because it's true:
Lambert's complete disregard for reasonable competitive behavior demonstrates a will to win - or at least disrupt - that is valuable in any organization. She also avoided getting caught, receiving only a yellow card for her antics. That shows that she understands that winning at any price is best accomplished when the price is almost entirely avoided.
Watching the highlights of Lambert's rage reminded me of the Hanson Brothers in "Slapshot" - the great George Roy Hill celebration of minor league hockey starring Paul Newman. The Hanson Brothers join the Charleston Chiefs and wage war in a way that captivates fans and turns a beautiful and graceful game into a bloody mess.
Lambert did something very similar on Thursday. She drew an enormous amount of attention to a game that only friends and family cared about. She has gone from an anonymous junior with an outstanding academic record (see her bio here) to a person America is talking about. Producers from the Today Show, CBS This Morning, and Good Morning America are at this moment stepping all over each other to get her on their shows on Monday morning.
An apology has already been issued by Lambert, which is unfortunate. No one was injured as a result of her theatrical physicality, and the only damage is to Lambert's reputation. Why would Lambert apologize for that? She should say, "Wait 'til next year. You want to score on the Lobos, you need to come through Elizabeth Lambert. I'm taking tae kwon do, and I'll be ready to bring the hurt next year. Grow some stones, forwards of the Mountain Valley Conference, because the toll for scoring goals while I'm on the field is steep!"

Slapshot is indeed a great movie (apart from the clothes; the leather jackets alone should attract an R-rating) but it's still a movie.
In part I agree the article is funny cos it's true. Professional apologies are rubbish, and only get read (yes, read; 99% of them are scripted by team lawyers and spin-meisters) because the players are forced to utter them.
As to the "no one was injured". The only thing that separated the tackled players from serious injury was luck. Can you imagine the rumpus if the girl cut down in the scything tackle had broken a leg? What if the pulled pony tail had resulted in a broken neck? That's why there are rules, yellow/red cards & suspensions.
That she only copped a yellow for arguing is not because her actions were condoned, it's because the referee was a fathead.

Ease up, turbo! I think a lot of it was tongue in cheek.
I also liked this "true" bit:
She drew an enormous amount of attention to a game that only friends and family cared about.

ie: It's funny coz some of it's funny and some of it's funny and true.
FTFY. ;)

Dogupyuz, sizzle chest.
This sounds wrong: "Born Elizabeth Ann Lambert on December 29, 1988 ... enjoys camping and surfing in her spare time ... favorite food is tacos ... is majoring in University Studies with a focus on Occupational Therapy."
Should read: "Born Elizabeth Ann Lambert on December 29, 1988 ... enjoys hunting in her spare time ... favorite food is raw meat ... is majoring in kick boxing with a focus on Occupational Hazards."
Did anyone else find it funny that the BYU are the "cougars"?

Good doogs?!? Didn't know anyone still said that - with or "without" quotation marks.

Missed that! I also missed this, as noted by a commenter on the lengthy fark.com discussion:
Her bio says her favorite food is "tacos" so perhaps New Mexico isn't the only other team she plays for...

Well, as much as I absolutely loathe and detest stereotypes and would never employ one, it is women's soccer.
Posted by: Tony | 09 November 2009 at 13:25
Yeah. Kinda sucks for the straights, eh? All the jokes etc. Women's soccer, cricket, and hockey. The axis of evil.
I went to uni with a lovely chick who played women's cricket coz she really liked sport and she really liked cricket. She ended up quitting after a few seasons coz she was the only straight in the team. Often the only straight in the match!
And she wasn't a homophobe or anything. She said it was a case of "do we have to have after-match beers at gay pubs ALL THE TIME? She just didn't feel welcome.
Er... don't know if I've got a point there. Maybe that some stereotypes exist for a reason, no matter how much you don't like stereotypes? Otherwise, I hope you enjoyed my tale.

You forgot golf.

You also forgot my other double barrelled stereotype that I opened with:
1. Angry chicks are awesome in bed
2. Angry chicks need a good seeing-to to calm them down
I'll be in my bunk.

I had an old girlfriend who played Hockey in the state league and she said 80% of the chicks that played were lesos as well.
As for women's cricketers hardly any of them even look like women.
