Have you ever seen a bigger farce in a game of VFL/AFL footy.
I thought Mike Sheahan was interesting in today's paper. He (correctly) notes that the game continues until the ump hears the siren and, well, a rule's a rule, but manages to gloss over the fact that another rule - that the siren keeps sounding until acknowledged - was broken.
I like seeing Freo lose as much as the next Eagles supporter, but they've been desperately shafted here.
I'm a Saints supporter and I'm all for giving Freo the game... only for the fact that it will hopefully hasten the departure of Grant "I'll do things my way and bugger the rest of you even if it leads to throwing away the best chance of a premiership for St. Kilda since 66" Thomas.
But I guess you could argue he already did that in the Prelim against the Swans last year.
You reckon Umpire Nicholls was on the take from Betfair or Tabcorp? If 10 blokes are around you screaming that the siren had blown, wouldn't you check with one of the other umpires before bouncing the ball?
The St Kilda honcos, Thomas and Butters, have looked like right pair of smug fuckers the way they've tried to justify the Aints getting the two points.
But it's a pity Baker didn't kick the goal. (First or second shot.) Imagine that! Ha!
PS: The Saints and Shockies are shit, but they are less shitty than Melbourne and the Roos, both of who are very shit.
I'm with you Adsy - Thomas is a backstabbing dickhead who needs to be sacked so the Saints can win a flag.
And you have to feel for Connolly - he has it rougher than most AFL coaches and then something like this happens. Wouldn't have mattered if they didn't choke I suppose.
I can't see any other coach acting any differently than Thomas when faced with a situation like this though. Your not going to hand a side two points when it was the administration that created the farce in the first place. And for Connolly to come out and say if he was in the Saints' position he'd give Freo the points is utter crap. These two blokes are in the gun with the media constantly and having missed out on the finals two seasons in a row by a game each time, there's no way he would have given the points up voluntarily if the situation was reversed.
I agree Connolly wouldn't offer to give the points back, and I don't think The Saints should either. Still, Thomas looked like a smug fucker yesterday, and Butters gave a heap of waffle on the rayjo this morning.
Yeah I agree that he did look like a smug prick yesterday after the game but you have to give him a little slack.... he looks like that 24/7.
Not taking away the fact that we don't have a ruckman and our backline is super suss (especially now that we don't have Penny who was definately underrated, and Jones who gave us the run out of full back we are now desperately missing), our game plan under Thomas has got to be the worst in the league. The "sit it on Riewoldt or Gehrig's head with 4 blokes on him and hope we can get a crumber to the fall to snap a miraculous goal if they don't mark" plan has been worked out by every man and his dog: except it seems, Thomas himself.
The "sit it on Riewoldt or Gehrig's head with 4 blokes on him and hope we can get a crumber to the fall to snap a miraculous goal if they don't mark" plan
They call that Operation Nietz.
(Hmmm - maybe it's a German thing. Hope Thomas & Daniher don't start thinking about Russia.)
I can't understand why the Freo players stood around like sheep when it was obvious that the umpire had not heard the siren, and had not signalled end of play.
Surely any schoolboy knows that the game doesn't end until the umpire signals.
Having said that, how did the Saints end up with a free kick?
As my dear old applecheeked granny was wont to opine:
"What a clusterfuck"
It was a soft kick, alright, but it was probably there, I've seen softer ones paid. Baker WAS dumped after he kicked it, but as usual in these matters, was the umpy being consistent? Dunno, myself, I only saw the first quarter and the last few minutes.
I think Operation Gehrig and Neitz might have British counter ops in Operation Richardson and Operation Lloyd if I'm not mistaken so its probably not a German only phenomena.
Having said that our defense is not exactly like that at Bastogne.
Jeez, Adrian Anderson can sound like a right tit. Did you hear his presser when announcing Wednesday's meeting? What a tool.
Mind you, the fact the AFL have even called a commission meeting suggests Freo are not a zillion miles away from getting the result over-turned. Maybe only a million.
Then again, the meeting might simply be a way for the AFL to keep things as they stand. To rubber stamp a whitewash, as it were.
I've got mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand Freo were definitely ripped off, but on the other, what happened to "play to the whistle" (and also you wouldn't have been in the position to draw or even lose if you weren't so shit in the last quarter). I'd give Freo the points out of pity - and they need the help.
"PS: The Saints and Shockies are shit, but they are less shitty than Melbourne and the Roos, both of who are very shit."
Gotta agree there Tony. I take back my earlier appraisal of the Roos being no worse than last year - it looks like they are about to implode under the weight of creaky bones.
I know this is very last week, but with a team song like 'Freeo....way to go..hit em real hard, send em down below...freeo give em the ol' heave ho, we are the freeo dockers'.....
who gives a shit?
But, if you're a fighting fury, and from Tiger Land, ....that's different
Freo are still shit.

You're forgetting about the rarely-known Italian job, Operation Phil Matera. Involving the shortest KPP in history.
